So close, you can taste it!

Wednesday is the day, the start of my biggest event of the season: the 83rd annual Feast of Saint Rocco on Main Street in Fort Lee, New Jersey. I wait all year for this, one of the best Italian-American feasts in New Jersey, a stone’s throw from NYC, overlooking the George Washington Bridge. If you are a regular feast-goer, then you know how great this one is and if you don’t go to many of them—this is THE ONE to go to.

I will be set up by the main entrance with Johnny Meatballs On A Roll – The World’s First Mobile Meatball Cart (open to close, all 5 nights) serving meatball sandwiches and dishes of macaroni. I will also be selling commemorative Saint Rocco bottled root beer and orange soda. So be sure to come by and visit this amazing festival, it is so rich with tradition with the procession of the beautiful saint statue and there are so many fun things to do—for folks young and old—besides just eating…

The festivities have rides, games, fortune tellers, face painters, live music, of course the wine with peaches, fireworks on Saturday night, and there will be many new and exciting vendors and stands with merchandise and information. Old favorites will be present like “Crazy Vinny” the sausage man who puts on his straw hat and dances for the crowd while cooking. Besides me and Vinny there will be stands featuring riceballs, calamari, clams, pizza, shish-ka-bob, bbq corn, gyros, Italian ice, ice cream, fried Oreos & Snickers, cotton candy, peanuts…and zeppoles of course!

For the second year in a row, my cugines, “Morningside Lane” will be performing on opening night at the main stage. They are a great group of kids who play some amazing music.

There will also be (among others), a psychic card reader, stands with religious novelties, tons of Italian cds, tapes, apparel (t-shirts, soccer jerseys, jackets), kids toys, and some real wild stands including: “Dunk-A-Fort Lee-Cop,” and “Dunk The Guido In A Speedo,” as well as the annual pizza/cannoli eating contests.

Things are capped off by the Italian mass in honor of St. Rocco on Sunday at 9am. The parade begins at 4pm in front of the church and goes through the streets of Fort Lee. The annual 50/50 Joseph Mariano Scholarship Raffle (proceeds go to local H.S. graduates to help with college) drawing is on Sunday night at 9:00 pm. The winner does not need to be present to win and tickets are $10.

Here are a few new additions, some personal friends of mine…

“Empanada
Man” will be rolling into the festivities with his big red empanada truck. He will definitely spice things up!

Sonja the Cupcake Cutie will be set up with her cupcake truck next to me with her “Italian line” of tiramisu and cannoli cupcakes among other treats.

Christine Vitale will also be a few spaces away from me sharing a tent with my friends Louis and Tom at the Fort Lee Film Commission promoting her fantastic radio program.

Jiminez
Tobacco will have their hand-rolled specialty cigars.
