Ode to the Garden State

New Jersey is so “in” right now. Just look at the countless reality shows being filmed here. But we have always been here!

And folks who aren’t from these parts sometimes get the wrong impression about us. Jerseyans just tell it like it is. So I’m gonna do that right now, with my own little poem, which is my ode to the great Garden State. I doubt it will be picked up as the state anthem, but nevertheless, here it is…

“Jersey Pride Never Dies”
I love New Jersey, where I was born and raised
I beam with pride for the great Garden State.
It’s a fact we got the highest population density...
You wanna know why, cause this is the place to be!
We got our own accent and that struttin’ attitude
Look, it’s all about confidence, we aint being rude.
Across the G.W.B., you got The City
…But Jersey takes no back door to N.Y.C.
The Giants and Jets play at The Meadowlands
Wall Street execs: remember that up in the stands!
The movie business started right here in N.J.
Tons of shows and films are shot across the Parkway.
People want to come and visit and act like us
Copycat our styles, high hair and such.
We fellas are the coolest, the girls are the hottest
That’s the truth, always own it, no point in being modest.
Whether you’re single or married, young or old
Enjoy all four seasons, and it’s never too cold.
No earthquakes here or hurricanes
Just buses and cars, planes and trains.
The most Italians around, this side of Italy
We’re also a melting pot of all nationalities.
We got malls everywhere, and the best places to eat
No wonder the traffic here is oh so crazy.
Our pizza, our bagels, nowhere else compares
Try to find a better slice, go ahead, it’s a dare!
Travel down the Turnpike, there’s more to love
Mountains, woods, wild birds from up above.
Horses, deer, honeybees all around
Diners, devils, tomatoes, blueberries abound.
Keep driving south and you got the shore
The beaches, A.C., clubs with packed dancefloors.
Sinatra, Frankie Valli, Bon Jovi and The Boss
Anyone can make it here, we succeed at all cost!
Einstein and many others came and made their mark
If not for Edison, we’d be living in the dark.
Jersey pride never dies, East Coast is the zone
There’s nowhere else that I would rather call home.

Ah.

Thank you for reminding me why I moved to Massachusetts.

I say this sincerely, and

I say this sincerely, and not just as a dig or a slight, but if you want to understand why people from New York laugh at you, why people from New Jersey hate you or are disgusted by you, this poem is a great illustration. You allow yourself to look like a clown, and then you lump me and everybody else from New Jersey in with you. It's like shitting your pants and then chasing everybody around with it on your hands. We DON'T want your special brand on us.
