May 21st interview of Annie Lanzillotto about her performance work which examines the squashing of Streetcries by NYC Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia's 1936 injunction: "Rule 23: No Shouting or Hawking by Vendors nor Abusive and Lewd Language." Lanzillotto collects streetcries from around the world, old and new recordings. Special guest, singer/songwriter DuPree, takes a South Carolina flower cry, and vocally transforms it, giving an ethnomusicology perspective on race and peddling.

Annie, I believe your "Streetcries" is really a great project. All of us at i-Italy would be happy to help in any possible way... And by the way, I just found an article in the "Code of Ordinances, City of Ackworth, Georgia" that prohibits "The shouting and crying of peddlers, hawkers and vendors that disturbs the peace and quiet of the neighborhood..." :-) It's here, article 59...

thanks Ottorino, The Streetcries Collection needs a place on the web where people can collect the cries of their locale, and self-post to the web, marking a map. I spoke to City Lore; see their (www.placematters.org) website which functions in this way for memories of NYC. They recommended I find a fiscal sponsor and apply for N.E.A. funding, to get the collection going strong.

thanks for the code of ordinances. Looks like they had an Italian mayor when that rule was passed stopping "the shouting and crying of peddlers..."

I'm looking to revoke La Guardia's Rule 23 in NYC. Don't you think it's time? Just in time for Bloomberg's "greencart" revival initiative, if it ever gets perfected to help immigrants who want to vend fruits and vegetables..
