Poet Merini to get state funeral. Literary world to pay tribute in Duomo

ANSA. Italian poet Alda Merini is to receive a state funeral in her native Milan, Mayor Letizia Moratti said Monday. Wednesday's funeral in the Duomo would pay tribute to a writer whose importance was both local and national, the mayor said. ''Alda Merini charted a course through the history and culture of our city, providing important reflections for the rest of the country,'' Moratti said. (Read the article)

Caravaggio's secret self-portrait. Tiny portrait uncovered in Uffizi 'Bacchus'

ANSA. A tiny-self portrait of Caravaggio in his famous painting of Bacchus can be seen clearly for the first time, thanks to a new study by researchers and restorers. The image of the artist working at his easel, hidden in a reflection of the glass carafe in the young god's hand, was first spotted by a restorer cleaning the canvas in 1922. (Read the article)

Vinitaly is Italy’s enormous wine fair, held in Verona every year in April. It lasts for four days, two of which are open to the public and the other two are exclusively for the “trade.” The trade in this case can be restaurateurs, wine stores, wine importers and wine journalists, essentially everyone who works in the business in one fashion or another.

On November 3, 2009, Italian Ambassador to the US Giulio Maria Terzi di Santagata and Italian Consul General in New York Francesco Maria Talò, will bestow the knightly insignia upon Stefano Albertini during a private ceremony.    Albertini has been appointed Knight of the "Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana" for his contribution to the promotion of Italian culture abroad, recognizing his work for Casa Italiana Zerilli-Marimò at NYU and his successes in coordinating relations between the Italian cultural institutions of New York.

Mafia execution video made public. Prosecutors release scene of Camorra hit to find killer

ANSA. A mafia execution caught on surveillance cameras shocked Italians on Thursday when Naples prosecutors released the video in an attempt to find the killer. Police have had no success in finding the killer of Mariano Bacioterracino, a man with possible mafia links, gunned down in broad daylight outside of a bar in central Naples last May. Oggi in Italia, presi nel vortice di questa paludosa e vergognosa situazione, in cui il privato è pubblico ed entrambi sono indecenti, ci troviamo più ad argomentare se un compagno preso a “transeggiare” in strada è meno colpevole di un premier colto a “escortare” in villa o viceversa, che a parlare di cose serie, di problemi urgenti e reali, anche fra le macerie di un terremoto mediaticamente ormai consumato e al collasso.
