Fire bombs target tax office in Italy

Firemen were called in after one of the two petrol bombs landed on the doorsteps of the Equitalia building, police told Reuters. Nobody was hurt.

Public anger against Equitalia has been rising after a wave of highly publicized suicides by small businessmen in Italy, where the government of Mario Monti has increased taxes along with the retirement age to fight spiraling public debt.

I've been thinking lately about Giuseppe Rossi, and about the twists and turns that a sports career can take, even for the most promising athletes. If you're a U.S. soccer fan, you know plenty about Rossi, the Italian-American New Jersey native who chose to play for Italy over the U.S. and became a budding star for the Azzurri and Spain's Villarreal (where he scored 32 goals in all competitions in 2010-11).

Amanda Knox slander trial postponed in Italy

Amanda Knox's slander trial in Italy has been postponed until next year because the judge was busy with another trial. Knox faces a charge of slander in Perugia for publicly accusing police of physically and verbally abusing her during questioning after the 2007 slaying of her British roommate. A court on Thursday suspended the case until Feb. 5.

Italian beer making a splash in Philadelphia

The word birrificio may not yet quite roll off the tongue.But if Philadelphians continue to plunge into the exotic new beers that have recently begun appearing here from Tuscany, Piedmont, and Emiglia-Romagna, brewed with everything from chestnuts to barbera grapes, chinotto peel and myrrh, the Italian word for brewery should become a familiar one, indeed.
