judith harris

He was surely expecting it, but when the latest judiciary act involving former Premier Silvio Berlusconi arrived on Oct. 23, by all accounts it nevertheless came as una tegola in testa--a roof tile dropped on his head. Pisa Stands Tall, but Tremors Abound Elsewhere

Judith Harris

The good news is that Italian geologists have successfully regrounded the beloved Leaning Tower in the Piazza dei Miracoli in Pisa. Two decades ago experts realized that the famous medieval tower was tending to lean farther and faster than in the past, and risked a sudden and unpredictable collapse. “Mafia Brotherhoods: Organized Crime, Italian Style” by Letzia Paoli … Brilliant Social Scientific History – Absolutely!

Tom Verso

Knowledge in Western scientific society consists of two categories: ‘Observation’ and ‘Explanation’. First, the characteristics of the phenomenon being studied are ‘Observed’, then ‘Explanations’ (hypotheses) are posited to account for the Observed characteristics. Thus, for example, the biologists ‘Observes’ phenomena under-the-microscope, and then attempts to ‘Explain’ why the observed phenomena are-as-they-are. Similarly, scientific minded researchers of social phenomena (historians, sociologist, etc.) follow the same process of Observation and Explanation.
