Letta on the Crest of a Wave
Stormy seas lie ahead but for the moment Premier Enrico Letta is riding on the crest of a wave. With the now definitive splintering of former Premier Silvio Berlusconi's highly personalized political party, his formally reborn Forza Italia passes into the minority in both the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate. Thanks to Alfano's defection from Berlusconi, Letta hopes to remain in office until at least 2015. It is a victory for stability and, with luck, will postpone new national general elections even as economic problems continue to plague the country.

The Italian American Writers Association (www.iawa.net) has given voice to writers through its Reading series every second Saturday of the month since 1991. Approaching its 23rd year, the series calls two venues home: IAWA-East is held on the even months at Sidewalk Café (Feb, Apr, June, August, Nov.) and IAWA-West continues at Cornelia Street Café on odd months (Jan, Mar, May, July, Sept., Nov.)

Mafia-ology: The Terroni-ization of Southern-Italian Americans … A Gramsci Hegemony/Culture War Analysis
I use the word mafia-ology to mean the aggregate of Mafia ‘academic’ studies (e.g. Lupo’s “History of Mafia”) and ‘quais-academic’ journalism (e.g. Stille’s “Excellent Cadavers”). Further, I argue that Mafia-ologist de facto function as Terroni-izers. This is to say they contribute to the suppression of Patria Meridionale history and culture, or what Pino Aprie called “cultural lobotomy” and Gramsci “hegemony”. Mafia-ologist real crime story anthologies pass for social history, while all other aspects of the Patria Meridionale cultural history are ignored.
