Observant but unobtrusive, Minervini merges documentary and neorealist techniques to render his stories, and the people inhabiting them, with dignity and compassion. On Saturday, Sept. 13, IAWA will welcome two very accomplished authors -- Marie Helene Bertino and Joanna Clapps Herman -- both of whom share a passion for teaching. Bertino is part of the new wave of writers teaching in workshop settings and within the framework of the innovative One Story concept while Herman has been teaching at universities; much of her work reflects her "italianita," which has been an inspiration for her.

This year’s 71st Venice Biennale international film festival showcases one of Italy’s more polemical new films: actor Sabina Guzzanti’s 100-minute “The Barter, Investigation into a the State-Mafia Negotiation.” The story is based upon a deal believed to have been worked in the earlier Nineties which allegedly resulted in a peace treaty between the Italian authorities and the Sicilian Cosa Nostra under Salvatore (“Toto’”) Riina.
