IAWA Presents a Passion for Sicily and New York with Frank Polizzi and Nino Provenzano, Sat., September 10

On Saturday, September 10, 2011, the Italian American Writers Association (IAWA) presents two authors whose works reflect a passion for Sicily and New York. Frank Polizzi, whose literary journal, Feile-Festa traces Celtic links to Sicily has featured Nino Provenzano’s work, which includes two collections of poetry and a brush with Hollywood.

    Frank Polizzi’s most recent work appears in the chapbook All Around Town,(Finishing Line Press 2011).

His poems and stories have appeared in The Archer, Bitterroot, City Legacy, Electric Acorn (Dublin Writers), la bella figura, Mudfish, Paterson Literary Review, Sweet Lemons 2, Urban Spaghetti, Wired Art and others.  He won first prize in a poetry contest about New York City, sponsored by the New York Poetry Forum.
    The Guild of Italian American Actors (GIAA) conducted a reading of his one-act play, By the Light of a Barber Pole. He recently completed a second novel set during World War II.
    Polizzi is currently the editor of Feile-Festa, a multicultural, literary arts journal and is also the President of the Mediterranean & Celtic Cultural Association. Past projects have included organizing an annual Italian film presentation for the Da Vinci Society at Wagner College; working on the committees for the 200th Anniversary of Old St. Patrick’s Cathedral and most recently, was involved with the  Remember the Triangle Fire Coalition.  Currently he is on the Education Committee of Casa Belvedere, The Italian Cultural Foundation of Staten Island.
    Nino Provenzano has written two collections of poetry: Vinissi... : I'd Love to Come..., (LEGAS, 1995), and Tornu / The Return, (LEGAS, 2009) both of which were translated into English by Gaetano Cipolla, director of the international organization, Arba Sicula that is dedicated to promoting and preserving the Sicilian culture and its many dialects.
    Currently the Vice President of Arba Sicula, Provenzano has been the subject of at least two articles in The New York Times regarding his own work and his promotion of Sicilian poetry in America. 
    Not long ago, he provided English-to-Sicilian translations for the feature film, MAC, directed by John Turturro, and he worked with director, Spike Lee, to prepare actor, John Leguizamo, for his role in the film, Son of Sam.  Provenzano frequently recites his poetry at colleges, universities and cultural exchange festivals around the world.
    The reading takes place Saturday, September 10, 2011, 5:45 p.m. to 7:45 p.m., at the Cornelia St. Café, 29 Cornelia Street, NYC, (212-989-9319); www.corneliastreetcafe.com. The evening starts with Open Mic readings of five minutes each. Since 1991, the organization has given voice to writers through its Open Reading series at Cornelia St. Café every month.
