Getting a letter or postcard in the mail is a nice surprise.  Sending a short note or postcard to someone I'm thinking about makes me happy.  I've learned to give myself permission to keep them short and to the point.  Brief and from the heart keeps letter writing fun.

Right after I got off the phone with my brother Eric, I was thinking about our mother.  When inspiration strikes, I like to strike out by using whatever is handy.  Digging through my briefcase for a scrap of paper I found this leftover thank you card.  Perfect!

A funny thing happened
while I was writing this short note to my mother.  I was sitting at a table in a coffee shop and a woman who had read my new book What If Godzilla Just Wanted a Hug? [4] rushed over, excused herself and began to thank me.  She told me how much the stories of love, faith and forgiveness have meant to her over the past few days.  Her father suffered a major heart attack.  Throughout the ordeal of rushing him to the hospital and then while in the waiting room during his procedure, the words, 'inch by inch' kept going through her head.  She continued to share how the chapter she was referring to, "I grew and inch when I quit art school and joined the Coast Guard," had helped her to remain calm moment by moment in spite of her fear and her frazzled family members.  Then she told me how the chapter, "My rotten mother was the perfect mom", helped her see the often strained relationship between her and her mom from a higher perspective.  Flattered, I thanked her and then I showed her that I just finished writing a short love note to MY mother.   She smiled, thanked me for the inspiration, and before she left we hugged.
