Gaddafi Wants to Meet Italian Women
MYFOX NATIONAL. Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi is scheduled to visit Rome next week and he has requested a meeting with 700 Italian women. Gaddafi, who has a women-only corps of bodyguards, met with 1,000 women on a visit to Paris in 2007. In that meeting he said he wanted to "save European women." During his visit to Rome, Gaddafi will be staying in a tent set up on the grounds of a 17th century villa on a hill above the city. (Read the Article)
East Boston cancels Italian festival
WHDH. The economic emergency has claimed another victim.The community group Italia Unita usually puts together the three-day event. Organizers said it's just too costly to put on.
"It's really a sign of the economy in general. We went into this year behind and we have not been able to raise enough money to cover the debt we had from last year and then get going for this year," said Charles Clark, Italia Unita. The event costs $80 to $100,000. (Read the Article)
Obama to host Italian PM in mid-June
CHINAVIEW. U.S. President Barack Obama will host Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi on June 15 to discuss preparations for the coming Group of Eight (G8) Summit, the White House announced on Saturday. "The president looks forward to discussing preparations for the G8 Summit that will take place in L'Aquila, Italy in July, and consulting with the prime minister on a broad range of strategic issues of mutual concern," the White House said in a statement. Fish, environment boom at Italy's Portofino park
REUTERS. The chic Italian seaside resort of Portofino may be known for its postcard-perfect views and celebrities, but deep underwater, the rich sea life is also claiming a name of its own. In the last 10 years, since the Protected Marine Area of Portofino was founded, fish populations have grown as some activities became regulated or even banned, local officials, environmentalists, fishermen and divers said. "Some fish that were not there before have now reappeared," said Giorgio Fanciulli, director of the marine protected area. (Read the Article)
