Summer spreads out the spread

The upward surge of the spread to today's 506.48 for 10-year bonds (but 519 at the opening of the markets) has reignited interest in holding elections this November, six months ahead of schedule. The emergency premier Mario Monti reportedly told President Giorgio Napolitano Wednesday that, "My government has done what it could." Whether or not these were Monti's precise words, they definitely express a darkening mood.

Italy's Di Martino withdraws from London Games

Italian high jumper Antonietta Di Martino has withdrawn from the Summer Olympics after undergoing surgery on her left knee. Di Martino, who holds the Italian record in the high jump, sustained the injury while training in April, but had hopes of competing in London until having the operation Wednesday in Rome.

Italy's Flag Colors to Illuminate the Empire State Building's South Façade

For the duration of the London Olympic Games, the Empire State Building will be illuminated every night in the colors of the flags of the competing nations. On July 28 the south façade of the landmark building will shine in red, white and green honoring Italy.

 Life can be speedy in Southern Italy if you're in the back of a car driven by a zealous Italian. But happily, this is the fastest moving part of my holiday to the prettiest part of Italy's heel. Puglia produces 40 per cent of the country's olive oil, tonnes of pasta and gallons of wine, and is regarded as Italy's garden.
