Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti said on Tuesday there was light at the end of the tunnel of the euro zone debt crisis but offered no clear signal on the prospects of the bold action this week by officials hoped for by financial markets.

The famed 2,000-year-old Colosseum in Rome could be suffering from a “stress fracture” from the inside, Italian geologists said Sunday, after observing that the monument’s south side is slanting lower than its north side by 16 inches.

The emergency premier Mario Monti reportedly told President Giorgio Napolitano Wednesday that, "My government has done what it could." Whether or not these were Monti's precise words, they definitely express a darkening mood.
