Italian/American Studies will flourish only if it gets the requisite support, first and foremost, from its community in order for it then to be part of the larger discourse. We need to support our artists, writers, and scholars.
Italian/American Studies is (some might say should be) becoming more and more part of Italian Studies in the United States. As some of you know, there are a few outlets dedicated to scholarship on the Italian diaspora here in the United States. I am connected to two of them.

Blue shark spotted bathing near Rome beach

 Italian holidaymakers had more than just a lazy day in the sun Wednesday after a rare visit from a blue shark that came to wallow just 10 metres from a beach outside Rome, said local coastguard.

Veneto: 800 Plastic Dolls Against Women Trafficking

On the occasion of the 32nd edition of the Operaestate Festival in the Vicenza province of Italy, a provocative art installation will try to raise awareness on the issue of human trafficking. On August 25th in Bassano del Grappa, artists Anna Piratti and Silvia Gribaudi will invite the public to take action against sexual exploitation by scattering 800 naked dolls in Piazza della Libertà.

Motorcycling-Dovizioso named by Ducati as Rossi replacement

Ducati have selected Andrea Dovizioso to replace fellow Italian rider Valentino Rossi for the next two seasons, the MotoGP team announced on Wednesday. Yamaha Tech 3's Dovizioso, 26, will join team mate Nicky Hayden at Ducati until 2014 after seven-time MotoGP world champion Rossi opted to switch back to Yamaha next season.

Inter Milan Signs Italy Striker Antonio Cassano From AC MIlan

 Inter Milan signed Italian national team striker Antonio Cassano from AC Milan, the two clubs said on their websites. Striker Giampaolo Pazzini moved from Inter to AC Milan as part of the deal.

Italy's Monti to meet Merkel in Berlin on August 29

Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti will meet with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin on Aug. 29, Italy's government said in a statement on Wednesday. The meeting will be part of a round of shuttle diplomacy between euro zone leaders following a brief summer lull and in the run-up to what could be a crucial month in the bloc's 2-1/2 year debt crisis.

Italy heatwave brings down historic wall section in Rome

 A section of wall dating back to the early 19th century overlooking one of Rome's most historic squares -- Piazza del Popolo -- crumbled on Wednesday due to the heatwave that is sweeping Italy.

Italian family in Sardinia is world’s oldest

The oldest family in the world is an Italian one living on the island of Sardinia, where nine brothers and sisters have a collective age of 818 years, according to the Guinness World Records. Italy’s AKI news agency said that after seven years of investigation, Guinness announced that the Melis family from Olgiastra is the longest-living family in the world.

Just when UNESCO recognized five more Italian sites as part of the world's cultural heritage, Florentine Mayor Matteo Renzi decided to block engineer Maurizio Seracini's search for the Leonardo Da Vinci's fresco of the Battaglia di Anghiari believed to exist on a wall in the city's town hall.
