US probing UniCredit unit over breaking sanctions

 Italy's UniCredit bank has confirmed that U.S. authorities are investigating its German unit for possibly breaking economic sanctions, but stopped short of naming Iran as the country it was dealing with.

George Clooney Looking to Sell Italian Villa Because of Paparazzi

ROME – It looks like actor and Italy regular George Clooney may be severing his ties with the Bel Paese, at least according to a report from Italian news program TG 24. The report said that Clooney is looking to sell Villa Oleandra, the mansion he bought on the shores of Lake Como 10 years ago, in order to distance himself from the attention of the corps of paparazzi who follow his every move while there.

Italy health minister mulls France-style drinks tax

Italy's health minister is considering the inclusion of a tax on drinks deemed unhealthy in a spending bill due to go before the Italian cabinet later this week, a health ministry official said on Monday. The official confirmed Health Minister Renato Balduzzi may propose a drinks tax of 3 euro cents a bottle to raise revenues of 250 million euros ($312.9 million), but did not clarify which beverages would be affected. Italian miners barricade themselves to call attention to mine

 More than 100 miners have barricaded themselves with explosives inside a carbon mine on the Italian island of Sardinia as they seek to persuade the government to invest in the mine's future. The strike began Sunday night with 40 miners holed up with roughly 100 kilograms (220 pounds) of explosives.

Immigration authorities have deported a Brooklyn man back to Italy to face a host of criminal charges.Tommaso Accetta was taken by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers Thursday from Newark Liberty International Airport to Rome.
