In the March 2014 “Venice Independence Referendum”, the majority of Venetians (2.1 million, 89 % of voters, out of an electorate of 2.3 million) voted that they “want the Veneto to become an independent and sovereign federal republic” (http://www.pcworld.com/article/2112380/evoting-comes-of-age-in-italy-with-venice-independence-referendum.html). --- Typically, mass media reporting placed this ‘separatist’ vote in the context of other European separatist movements: Crimea, Scotland, Catalonia, etc.

Stolen paintings hung on Italian factory worker's wall for almost 40 years

In 1975 a worker at the car firm Fiat went along to an auction of lost property organised by the Italian national railway in Turin. He paid 45,000 lira (£32 – equivalent to about £300 today) for two paintings that caught his eye – one a still life and one an image of a woman relaxing in her garden.

Italian navy rescues 730 migrants in overcrowded boats off Sicily

The Italian navy rescued 730 migrants from overcrowded boats in the Mediterranean Sea south of Sicily, it said Wednesday.The migrants, who departed in two boats from North Africa, are being taken to a port in Sicily's Agrigento province, the navy said in a statement.
