On Saturday, March 13, 2009 the Italian American Writers Association (IAWA) celebrates its 19th Anniversary with two award-winning authors: Kara Candito whose recent work won the Prairie Schooner Book Prize and Ned Balbo whose newest work includes Something Must Happen published by Finishing Line Press.
Ned Balbo’s other recent work can be seen in print and online at Shenandoah, [4] River Styx, [5] and Notre Dame Review [6], and on-line at Unsplendid and Studio. His second book, Lives of the Sleepers (University of Notre Dame Press, [7] 2005), received the Ernest Sandeen Prize [8]and a ForeWord Book of the Year Award [9]. His first book, Galileo's Banquet, received the Towson University Prize. [10]
Kara Candito is the author of Taste of Cherry, (University of Nebraska Press [11]), winner of the 2008 Prairie Schooner Book Prize. [12] Her poems and reviews have appeared or will appear in such journals as Blackbird, AGNI, Prairie Schooner, The Kenyon Review [13], Gulf Coast, Nimrod, Contrary Magazine, Best New Poets 2007 [14], Diode, and The Florida Review [15]. She has received awards for her poetry, including an Academy of American Poets Prize, an Edward H. & Marie C. Kingsbury Fellowship, and scholarships from the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference [16].
