Cafe Society (1995)

Binding: VHS Tape
List price: $21.96

This 1995 curiosity by Raymond DeFelitta suffers from miscasting and some grating ideas about shooting and editing sex scenes for the ultimate visual dissonance. But it is also an insightful period piece that is set in the 1950s and is concerned with official efforts to secure trophy arrests and trump up charges for maximum career gain. A web is spun once an undercover cop (Peter Gallagher) steps into a Manhattan nightclub and sets his sights on a gossipmonger and part-time pimp (John Spencer), as well as the latter's ne'er-do-well playboy nephew (Frank Whalley).

On the perilous steamship crossing Salvatore meets a mysterious worldly Englishwoman Lucy (Charlotte Gainsbourg) and an unexpected romance unfolds. But neither Salvatore nor Lucy is prepared for the arrival at Ellis Island where families are inspected interrogated and split apart.

Respiro

Binding: DVD
List price: $29.95

A sunny seaside location and the radiant beauty of Valeria Golino are enough to set the mood in Respiro, a fitfully effective Italian film. Hollywood never quite figured out what to do with Golino, but she blossoms in this story about a sensual wife who's either free-spirited or manic-depressive, depending on your perspective. Her fisherman husband (Vincenzo Amato) finally decides to have her sent away for professional help, which only provokes an even more impulsive act from her. Within this story is a pointed critique of male machismo--Italian style.

Box of Moonlight

John Turturro plays a humorless engineer who uncharacteristically takes a brief break from his life to find the source of his only happy childhood memory. When that fails to materialize, he offers a ride to a benign, buckskin-attired kook (Sam Rockwell) and soon gets much deeper into the young fellow's unhinged life than he ever intended. Director Tom DiCillo (Living in Oblivion) makes a good case that Turturro's character is getting what he needs (a lot of loosening up) versus what he wants (everything on his terms).

Romanza

Binding: Audio CD
List price: $18.98

From his childhood on the family farm in rural Tuscany to the worldwide stage, Andrea Bocelli has achieved phenomenal success. His singing is only partially the point, and his fame owes much more to the aura of romance and the romantic archetype that's attached to him. Romanza is by far Bocelli's largest success, winning adoration thanks to the swooning vocals and the easy, sometimes lush, always pop-safe instrumental textures and melodies. As far as his opera chops go, Bocelli has won the approval of Pavarotti but likely will not wow enthusiasts.
