"The era of the Corleonesi is definitely at an end." We are witnessing "the mutation of the Mafia strategy into one that is clearly based on finance." (Antonio Ingroia, Prosecutor)

Explaining American Politics Again: The Health of Democracy

Jerry Krase

It is difficult to explain why, in reference to the passage of HR3962 "The Affordable Health Care for America Act," so many people who will actually benefit from it protested against it (and continue to do so). Attempts like this one are doomed to failure but I least I can say "I tried." (Ci ho provato)

Italians abroad. Second-class Readers, Second-class Citizens

Letizia Airos

Funding to publishers is cut in half – but it only applies to Italian newspapers abroad. History repeats itself. Neglect and upheaval, Italian-style? Those newspapers affected include America Oggi in the U.S., La Voce d’Italia in Venezuela, Gente d’Italia in Uruguay, Il Corriere Canadese in Canada, Il Globo in Melbourne, and La Fiamma in Sidney, Australia. All are in danger of folding.

Italian press and commentators enthusiastic about Obama's health care reform

FROM JUDITH HARRIS, ROME. The Italian press and commentators were by and large enthusiastic about the reform, and were saying Tuesday evening that it is a great success for President Obama. News photos showed the President and Nancy Pelosi together, and mentioned that the Kennedy family members were in tears of joy. When questioned about the cost, one university professor, an economist, pointed out that a healthy public is also a more productive public. La Repubblica New York correspondent Federico Rampini wrote that, "Obama has gotten something of a kick out of the battle," and is ready with new projects, beginning with regulation of the financial markets.
