Italian PM, president locked in battle over euthanasia case

AFP. Italy was locked in a constitutional battle on Friday as President Giorgio Napolitano refused to sign into law an emergency decree to stop the mercy killing of a woman who has been comatose for 17 years. In a case reminiscent of the American Terry Schiavo's, conservative Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi mounted a high-profile effort to block a court ruling allowing doctors to remove Eluana Englaro from life support. Italy sends more troops to Afghanistan

Guardian.co.uk. Italian Government answers Barack Obama's Nato request by increasing deployment by 800 soldiers to 2,800. There are 2,000 Italian troops in Afghanistan, mostly in the western province of Herat. That will be increased to 2,800 this year, according to European diplomats. An announcement is expected soon. British student murder trial continues in Perugia. Kercher suspect 'wouldn't hurt fly'

ANSA.   An Italian on trial with his American girlfriend for the murder of British student Meredith Kercher said Friday that he ''wouldn't hurt a fly''. As the trial of Raffaele Sollecito, 24, and Amanda Knox, 21, reopened in Perugia, Sollecito said in an address to the court that he was the victim of a miscarriage of justice. (Read the article)
