On the same day that Rolling Stone magazine made Pope Francis its latest front-page hipster, a mural artist in Rome depicted the pontiff as Superman on a wall near Vatican City.

Pope's blood may have been stolen to order say police

A religious reliquary containing the blood of Pope John Paul II that was taken from a remote church in the mountains of central Italy may have been stolen to order, police believe. The reliquary, a piece of cloth stained with the blood of the late Pope and encased in gold, was taken during a break-in at the Church of St Peter of Ienca, a tiny stone chapel in the Apennine mountains which is dedicated to the Polish pontiff.

Daniel Barenboim leads La Scala's last tribute to Claudio Abbado

Inside, the rows of red velvet seats were empty. But outside, huddling in the cold and dark, thousands of people had come to hear the Milanese opera house La Scala say goodbye to one of its most admired and beloved sons.

Guggenheim Is to Show Rare Murals by a Futurist

As a capstone to its coming show “Italian Futurism, 1909-1944: Reconstructing the Universe,” the Guggenheim Museum has managed a rare coup: securing the first loan of five major Futurist murals from the central post office in Palermo, Sicily, where they have hung since being commissioned for the space in the 1930s.

Sant’Elia e l’enciclopedia Treccani

Luigi Casale

Etimologia - Erario, Fisco, Moneta

Luigi Casale

Remembrance Day is Really for Everyone Else

Andrea Fiano

The Point of participating in one of the many upcoming events scheduled in New York City.
Remembrance Day is not for the victims; they can’t forget. And they certainly don’t need a special anniversary to do so. As the son of an Auschwitz survivor arrested in Florence, I don’t need a special date either.

Pimples, Warts & All. "Paint my Picture Truly Like Me!"

Judith Harris

"Paint my picture truly like me," Oliver Cromwell (1599-1658) told the artist about to paint his portrait, "pimples, warts, and everything as you see me." Is this what Silvio Berlusconi told Paul Stuart, the Sunday Times photographer famous for his realistic portraits? Italian commentators tend to agree that Stuart's less than flattering photographs published this Sunday usher in a new phase for the former Premier, who is back on the front pages thanks to his negotiations with Renzi over a new election law.
