Marcella Hazan has done to Italian cuisine in America, what Julia Child has done for French cuisine. The celebration of what would have been the ninetieth birthday of Hazan was also a launch and a nationwide fundraised for The Marcella Hazan Scholarship at the ICC, which will provide funding to students at he ICC's Italian Chef Course in the name of the legendary cook.

U.S. companies are quite literally taking a gamble when they seek to hire a foreign national temporarily. They need to place their bets 6 months before the date of hire. If that doesn’t work, they can try again next year, and the year after that. The congressional limit on the number of H1Bs available each year just doesn’t make sense for corporate America. We need to enable the U.S. economy to grow and if that means allowing U.S. companies to hire foreign nationals when needed, then the hiring process should not be reduced to a lottery.

Italy's Easter basket is filled with treasures, but they come with problems, and even the basket is fraying. Underlying the problems is, as this reporter has written repeatedly, the abundance of the Italian cultural heritage. Nowhere is this more visible than at Pompeii, whose years of moral and physical lapses are taken by some outsiders, perhaps erroneously, as a sad metaphor for the country itself. But there are good eggs in that basket too.

On Wednesday afternoon, two days before its scheduled closing, Rizzoli Bookstore was crowded with the sort of people who, never especially populous in Midtown Manhattan, appear even more like icicles in the desert: gray-haired women with Mohawks or turbans, students, men with indifferent facial grooming, older citizens.
