I-Italy’s “Grandparents and Grandchildren in Italian America” project documents the Italian presence in the United States by way of a series of conversations between grandparents and grandchildren. We have only just begun this new adventure with our first TV and Web series made in collaboration with ANFE and with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Now our hope is to continue the project in a truly “social” vein with your help.

Italy Starts Euro 2016 with a Bang

Italy won a decisive match on Monday, June 13th against Belgium, winning 2-0. Although pegged as weak and doubtful to make a deep run in the tournament, Italy gave a great performance in their first match and knocked off the heavy favorite of their group.

How did the Italian food we love come to be on our plates? A look at cookbook history

 We take Italian food for granted. Surrounded as we are by cookbooks, cooking shows, and restaurants, both fancy and humble, featuring the cuisine of everyone’s favorite footwear-shaped country, we often fail to wonder how this wonderful food was passed down to us. So much of French, English, and American food was preserved in cookbooks from an early date — France and England both have unbroken runs of recipe books starting in the 17th century, but Italy was a little different.

Giovanni ‘Gianni’ Giotta, Caffe Trieste founder, dies at 96

 He was born in 1920 in Rovigno on the Istrian peninsula, a town that now belongs to Croatia. He came from a fishing family and began accompanying his father on the boats when he was just 6, graduating to merchant marine ships by the age of 15. He met his wife, Ida, when he was 19 and she was 15, and the couple immigrated to San Francisco in 1951.

Margaret Heldt, Hairdresser Who Built the Beehive, Dies at 98

 ichela Theresa Vinci (she pronounced her last name VIN-see) was born in Chicago on Feb. 11, 1918. Her parents were Italian immigrants; her father was a cooper who made wine barrels.
