I had a recent conversation with Professor Calabretta-Sajder, Dean of the New Jersey Lago del Bosco camp. I asked him to respond to a few questions of mine so that I could share this with a larger public. Programs like Lago del Bosco only assist those of us in the Italian-language teaching community; they prepare students for more advanced course in high school and college. Furthermore, they provide students with that one key that gains them access to Italian culture: language!

Benedetto XVI ci appare diverso. Quest'uomo di 81 anni che finora era apparso freddo, intellettualmente congelato nella scontata rigidità di alcune sue posizioni, ora in questo viaggio in Usa d'un tratto appare come "ringiovanito", più moderno, più flessibile, più recettivo e in sintonia con i problemi dell'umanità, ma senza per questo far mancare la coerenza con i precetti etici e morali della Chiesa romana.

He was a man who exerted considerable charm, both over audiences and the many women he famously romanced. A documentary, "The Wildest", celebrates his life and gets a screening at the CUNY Graduate Center of Journalism.

Downtown Manhattan residents weren't too hot on Pope Benedict XVI. But here's the other side of the coin. Outside of Yankee Stadium the crowds waiting for Benedict to pass through--provided they weren't there to push the agendas of other Christian denominations--were keen on the new Pope. They couldn't attend the large-scale mass but most of them did their best to provide a welcome wagon.
