IAWA Welcomes Cutting Teeth author Julia Fierro and Poet Joanne Monte, Bordighera Prize Winner on Saturday, July 12, 2014

New York, NY - The Italian American Writers Association (IAWA) presents authors Julia Fierro and Joanne Monte on Saturday, July 12, 2014, at Cornelia Street Cafe from 5:45 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. Cornelia Street Café is located at 29 Cornelia Street in the West Village, NYC-10014; 212-989-9319; www.corneliastreetcafe.com. The featured writers take the stage after Open Mic readings of five minutes.

 Julia Fierro is the author of Cutting Teeth, which was included in 

>Library Journal’s “Spring Best Debuts” and on “Most Anticipated Books of 2014″ lists by HuffPost BooksThe Millions, FlavorwireBrooklyn Magazineand Marie Claire. Julia’s work has been published, or is forthcoming, in GuernicaPoets & WritersGlamour and other publications, and she has been profiled in the L MagazineThe Observer and The Economist. In 2002, she founded The Sackett Street Writers’ Workshop, and what started as eight writers meeting in her Brooklyn kitchen has grown into a creative home for over 2500 writers. She is a graduate of The Iowa Writers’ Workshop, where she was a Teaching-Writing Fellow, and lives in Brooklyn with her husband and their two children.


Joanne Monte is the recipient of the 2012 Bordighera Poetry Book Award for the collection, The Blue Light of Dawn.  Her poems have appeared in such literary journals as Poet LoreThe Raintown ReviewCerberusAncient Paths Literary Review and Poet.  Among her awards are The John David Johnson Memorial Poetry Award, The Writer's Digest Award and the New Millennium Writings Award IV for Poetry.  She also published a novel, The Day to Eternity, in 2012. In 1999, the American Biographical Institute selected her as one of two thousand notable American women for her literary and humanitarian contributions. 

IAWA’s next reading takes place on August 9 at Sidewalk Café with featured authors Antonio D'Alfonso of Guernica Press and Michael Cirelli of Urban Word.  IAWA’s Sept. 13 reading at Cornelia Street Café will feature Joanna Clapps Herman and Marie-Helen Bertino.

IAWA aims to promote Italian American literature by encouraging the writing, reading, publication, distribution, translation and study of Italian American writing. Since 1991, IAWA has given voice to writers through its Open Reading series held every second Saturday of the month at Cornelia Street Café on odd months and at the Sidewalk Café on even months.
