VENICE FILM FESTIVAL 2013 - Tracks, by John Curran - First Look Review

Simone Spoladori (September 1, 2013)

"Tracks" by John Curran has lights and shadows, but the talented Mia Wasikowska is a strong candidate for the Coppa Volpi for the best actress.

"Tracks", directed by John Curran, tells the true story of a young Australian girl, Robyn Davidson, that in 1977 walk a 2000-mile trek through the Aussie desert.

It obviously reminds us the plot of Sean Penn's "Into the Wild", but here there are lights and shadows. Its strongest emotional charge is mostly concerned with the performance from Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland"), who shows a variety of tones and shades remarkable, emphasizing at the same time the determination and the fragility of her character. Curran directs with a great sense for the show, with the right rhythm, slow and epic, and considering the nature in every shot as if it were a character. The more interesting thing is the representation of the desert  as an objective correlative of an inner condition.
On the other side, along this journey moving and emotional, Curran and his screenwriter Marion Nelson, forget to investigate the psychological dimensions of the main character. So, while through flashbacks emerge pieces unconscious by Robyn, we often wonder what's really driving the young woman to do this what is all this for.
However, we can surely say that the talented Mia Wasikowska is a strong candidate for the Coppa Volpi for the best actress.
